MikroElektronika’s 8 x 8 Y, R, and B click boards are add-on boards in mikroBUS form factor. They are a compact and easy solution for adding 8 x 8 yellow, red, or blue LED display matrices to your design. They feature the Maxim MAX7219 8-digit LED display driver module as well as 64 LED diode arrays in yellow, red, or blue colors. The 8 x 8 Y click communicates with the target board microcontroller via four DIN, DOUT, CLK, and CS mikroBUS™ SPI lines. The board is designed to use 5 V power supply only, but it can be used with 3.3 V MCUs as well.
Maxim's MAX7219 is a compact, serial input/output common-cathode display driver that interface microprocessors (µPs) to 7-segment numeric LED displays of up to 8 digits, bar-graph displays, or 64 individual LEDs. Included on-chip are a BCD code-B decoder, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and an 8 x 8 static RAM that stores each digit. Only one external resistor is required to set the segment current for all LEDs. The MAX7219 also includes a 150 µA low-power shutdown mode, analog and digital brightness control, a scan-limit register that allows the user to display from one to eight digits, and a test mode, which will force all LEDs on.
